Can You Tame Frizzy Hair Without Harsh Chemical Products?
If your hair is prone to frizz, you are probably familiar with the endless cycle of trying a new ‘miracle’ product to tame it, only to find that it eventually leaves your hair feeling even drier, or dull and greasy. Maybe you resort to heating styling tools to keep your hair under control, which will ultimately leave your hair more damaged and brittle.
The reason that so many ‘wonder’ products do not provide a long term solution for frizz is because they contain harsh ingredients such as sulfates and alcohol, which may temporarily smooth flyaway hairs, but will ultimately strip away the natural oils that protect it.
They may also contain synthetic ingredients that are difficult to rinse away, and can build up over time, causing your hair to look dull and lose its natural body and shine. However, there are natural hair conditioners that really can improve the appearance of frizzy, curly or very dry hair without causing any further damage.
What makes hair frizz?
Hair can look frizzy for several reasons, including the following:
The natural type and texture of your hair
If your hair is naturally curly or wavy, it will be more prone to frizz because the cuticles don’t lie flat, which makes it difficult for the natural oils produced by the scalp to travel all the way down the hair shaft.
Humid environments
When there is a lot of moisture in the air, the hair strands absorb it, which causes them to expand and move in uncontrolled directions rather than lying flat. The more dry and damaged the hair shaft is, the easier it is for moisture to penetrate it. Very dry conditions can also make frizz worse, because the hair tends to be affected by static.
Harsh products and styling
As we mentioned before, products that contain harsh chemicals can strip away the natural oils in the hair, leaving it dry and damaged. Heated styling tools or excessive brushing and rough towel drying can also cause deep damage to the hair cuticles.
The effects of ageing
As we get older, our hair tends to get finer and more prone to breakage. This can create a rough and uneven texture that can be difficult to manage.
How can you manage frizzy hair naturally?
Look for products that contain 100 per cent natural ingredients with no alcohol or sulphates. Key ingredients to look out for include shea butter conditioners or leave-in treatments. Shea butter is packed with vitamins A and E, which help to seal moisture into the hair shaft and leave your hair feeling beautifully soft and shiny.
Other products that can produce remarkable results for hair that is deeply hydrated but not weighed down or greasy include: organic coconut oil, organic Aloe Vera, cold pressed Brazilian Muru Muru Butter and cold pressed Macadamia Nut oils.
So there you have it: it really is possible to tame frizz without constantly fighting against the natural texture of your hair. If you have naturally curly hair, try gently patting it dry with a microfibre towel and leaving it to dry naturally rather than using a hairdryer whenever possible.
Some people also find that sleeping on a silk pillowcase rather than cotton helps to reduce that morning ‘bed head’ look. Above all, avoid strong chemicals and always opt for gentle organic products when you can.
